People Are Freaking Out on Twitter Because They Think The Wiz and Its All-Black Cast Is Racist

All of the facepalms

According to Buzzfeed, NBC’s live production of The Wiz has social media up in arms over the fact that it’s racist—because of its all-black cast. An all-black cast which was absolutely selected as such because the original 1975 musical, a loose adaptation of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz (which had an all-white cast), was made for an all-black cast. Composer and lyricist Charlie Smalls wrote the Tony-winning show to retell the classic story in the context of African-American culture. Oh, and the musical was turned into a film in 1978, starring (you guessed it) an all-black cast, including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Richard Pryor. So yeah, choosing an all-black cast for tonight’s show was a smart move. Like most good Twitter trolls, it seems none of the commenters thought to do an iota of research before throwing their two cents into the ether (our favorite offender’s comment is below). As a wise Scarecrow once said, “Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don’t they?”
