Once upon a time, we all might have spent our weekends going out to concerts or clubs and finding ourselves awash in new music. These days we’re limited to headphone jams and living room dance parties–but that hasn’t stopped talented artists from putting out new music for us to enjoy. Each week, we’ll pick a handful of newly released songs worth a play.
This Week’s New Music
MF DOOM and Czarface, “DOOM Unto Others”
Listeners get a bit more of late hip-hop icon MF DOOM’s voice on this album, another of his collaborations with the group Czarface. The album was originally set to be released in April 2020, but the artists held it back amid pandemic; six months later, DOOM passed away. “I speak for everyone involved when I say we were incredibly fortunate to have collaborated with DOOM… he was a one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-duplicated emcee, producer, and visionary,” the members of Czarface wrote in an Instagram announcement of the release. Doss, “On Your Mind”
The new EP from Doss–her first record in seven years–is boldly (and rather un-Google-ably) titled 4 New Hit Songs; “On Your Mind” marks the final of the titular four songs to be released as a single. “These songs are built from self reflection, growing, [and] empathy for yourself and the people around you,” Doss says of the new work, which has already been labeled “impeccable dance music” by Nylon–and “rly good” [sic] by Grimes. Yoke Lore, “Seeds”
Yoke Lore’s “Seeds” has a gentle, instant-nostalgia, road trips-and-sunsets feeling, and it comes as no surprise that the song was composed for a film soundtrack–specifically the Kelly Oxford-directed Pink Skies Ahead (also out this weekend). [artist info]
