Coachella draws thousands of fans out to the desert each spring, but just because it’s the biggest name in the game doesn’t mean it’s the only music fest around. These days, there are music festivals practically every weekend from April to November, with one catering to every genre and aesthetic preference. To help you identify the festivals that are worth your time, money, and inevitable sunburn, we’ve rounded up some top options.

CRSSD Festival Spring 2020

Spend a weekend by the water in San Diego enjoying music from dozens of top dance acts. Unlike some festivals, CRSSD is 21+ only, and the scale is on the manageable side, making for a pleasant experience.

Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival

Cruel World Festival

2020 Music Festival Guide: Summer

This rock fest bills itself as “a journey to the heart of the American Dream,” which, OK, we’re not exactly sure what that means in this context, but we can at least confirm that it’s an extremely solid lineup, with traditional concerts and a poolside “beach club” experience.

Life Is Beautiful

A big, bombastic festival, as only Las Vegas can deliver, Life Is Beautiful has risen quickly to become one of the region’s top pop fests. In addition to major musical artists, the experience includes a comedy stage, art exhibitions, and destination-worthy dining pop-ups. The “Ideas” stage is a unique offering, with TED Talk-inspired lectures from interesting folks.

KAABOO San Diego

KAABOO Del Mar has undergone what organizers term a “makeover” since last year. Now known as KAABOO San Diego, the festival will move to a new venue, Petco Park. Last year the festival involved elaborate staging, an extensive culinary program, comedy performances, and other enhancements in addition to the music. No 2020 lineup has yet been announced; according to the festival’s ticketing page, passes will be available for purchase in spring 2020.

This beloved European festival makes it’s long-awaited L.A. debut in 2020. Relatively few details have emerged so far, but we know the fest will be taking place at L.A. State Historic Park in downtown L.A.

This weekender is ostensibly curated by buddies Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam) and Kelly Slater (of professional surfing fame). Unlike the blacktop or trampled grass of most festivals grounds, Ohana takes place literally steps from the ocean and sand of Doheny State Beach.

Always heavy on vintage rock n’ roll vibes, Desert Daze takes place nestled between scenic mountains and Moreno Beach. The festival even has an on-site beach club and boats available to VIPs, as well as showers and proper bathrooms to make camping a much more pleasant experience. Desert Daze is a smaller festival, the crowds never feel overwhelming, and you can always take a break from music to explore surreal art installations or stop by the Mystic Bazaar.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass

This free festival in Golden Gate Park is a beloved Bay Area tradition. While “free concert in the park” might not sound like something that stacks up to the region’s other big music fests, with HSB you’ll reliably get way more than you pay for. Just about everyone in Americana, folk, rock, and adjacent genres has played, from Emmylou Harris and Margot Price to Kurt Vile and Mercury Rev.
