Graves to Dance On
Break out the face paint and go skeletal at the country’s largest Dia de los Muertos celebration (35,000 people attended last year). It unfolds in the cemetery where notables from Charlie Chaplin to Dee Dee Ramone are buried. The festivities begin at noon with a family-friendly carnival, segue into evening as the ceremonial altars are lit, and kick into high gear with a concert and a dance party that go until midnight. > Nov. 2; Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Hollywood, ladayofthedead.com.
That Freaky Feeling
KCRW’s Masquerade Ball promises to be the Coachella of Halloween parties—last year it drew more than 3,000 costumed guests to the opulent Park Plaza Hotel near MacArthur Park. The radio station’s DJs spin in various nooks and crannies, and this fall revelers can also boogie to live sets by Har Mar Superstar, the Lions, and Grizfolk at what is a wild combination of old-time carnival, Louis XVI-style grand bal masqué, and full-on dance rager. > Oct. 26; Park Plaza Hotel, Downtown, kcrw.com.
Putting on the Ritz
Cut a rug with a zom-bified World War I soldier or a blood-sucking bootlegger’s moll at Maxwell DeMille’s Cicada Club, the Jazz Age party held in downtown’s stunning art deco Oviatt Building. Guests are serious about the authenticity of their retro outfits, and they’re not shy about kicking up their heels. Performances by the big, brassy Dean Mora Orchestra keep things swinging at the shindig, where Prohibition is still the cat’s pajamas. > Oct. 31; Oviatt Building, Downtown, cicadaclub.com.
Before You Get Your Groove On, Get Your Threads On
The Western Costume Company in North Hollywood is the entertainment industry’s walk-in closet, but the pros here are just as happy to transform civilians into a Mad Men secretary. At Robinson Beautilities in Mar Vista, be prepared for an explosion of sequins and glitz in the over-the-top costumes. Ozzie Dots in Silver Lake is the perfect pit stop for detailed accessories from an earlier era, while Adele’s of Hollywood specializes in hand-sewn garments.
