The first season of Tina Fey’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt had one idea at its foundation: That Schmidt’s (Ellie Kemper) optimism was unrelenting, regardless of the constant stream of garbage that life threw her way. It’s the show’s biggest strength and its biggest weakness; on one hand, it’s incredibly refreshing to see a main character in their 20s or 30s who isn’t cynical, depressed, and ironic. Her unflappable disposition is what leads Schmidt to New York in the first place and what keeps her there. At times, though, the premise is a leeeeeetle hard to believe, and it can also get also a tad exasperating.
But this time around, Fey et al have doubled down: a new trailer for the show’s season two premiere (April 15) shows Kimmy turning most everything in drab, grey New York—a homeless guy, a taxi cab—pink and yellow (surely the most optimistic colors on the color wheel). Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess) makes an appearance, as does Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski). Meanwhile, a theme song pulsates in the background: It doesn’t get no better than this!
