Kendrick Lamar Hung Out with President Obama Because Mentorship

Kendrick Lamar was J chillin’ with President Obama in the Oval Office recently, Valerie Jarrett, the president’s senior adviser, revealed in an interview on the BuzzFeed podcast Another Round. “He came and he visited the president,” she says, “and you know what the president said to him? Because he was a little nervous—bless his heart, he’s really a very nice young man—and the president said, ‘Can you believe that we’re both sitting in this Oval Office?'”

The Compton-based hip hop star officially received the POTUS’s seal of approval late last year when Obama referenced ‘How Much A Dollar Cost?’ as his fave song of the year. Now the two are teaming up to promote the White House’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative. A promotional video for the program (directed by Dave Meyers & The Little Homies) features photos of their one-on-one and borrows footage from Lamar’s Hard Work promo, in which he shoots hoops with a young mentee. “I look where I’m at today and realize that most of my success is owed to the mentors that was in my life,” Kendrick says in the video.
