In March 2013, Los Angeles magazine published Michelle McNamara’s “In the Footsteps of a Killer,” about her quest to track down a serial rapist and murderer who terrorized California from 1976 to 1986.

Founder of the blog True Crime Diary and wife of the comedian Patton Oswalt, McNamara even sought tips from the public. “After all,” she wrote, “it was a parking ticket that eventually revealed David Berkowitz was the Son of Sam.”

The story landed McNamara a book deal, but in 2016, at 46, she died unexpectedly in her sleep. Thanks to an assist from Oswalt, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark hits shelves February 27. “I can’t help feeling that somewhere, in her final pages, she left enough clues for someone to finish the job she couldn’t,” he wrote on Facebook.
