How to Spend a Dozen Hours in Brentwood

Here’s your blueprint for spending a day in the swanky Westside ’hood

Gary Chau, co-owner and creative director of the boutique coffee roaster Caffe Luxxe, has lived in and around Los Angeles for most of his life. Between overseeing both of Caffe Luxxe’s Brentwood locations (one in the Country Mart, the other at 11640 San Vicente Boulevard) and calling the nabe home, he knows all the can’t-miss spots in this quiet—and star-studded—pocket of the Westside. Here’s how Chau and his dog, Ollie, recommend you spend a day in their part of town (with or without your pup).

Beaming Cafe

9:00 a.m.

“My favorite drink there is the Bluephoria smoothie. I like to add the Superfood boost to kick-start my day. The cafe is super clean and friendly—you leave feeling very light and healthy.”

Mandeville Canyon Park

9:30 a.m.

“You’ll see wonderful views of the canyon—all the way to downtown and to the ocean. It’s mainly locals, and it’s peaceful and quiet. There’s plenty of street parking, and it’s dog-friendly. You can go super deep into the mountains—like, miles.”

Brentwood Country Mart

“At Farmshop, not only can you have a meal, but there’s a market. So you can get cheese, charcuterie, and lots of different wonderful brands that you may not have even heard of, just for general shopping. A must-have after lunch is Sweet Rose Creamery. Their chef, Shiho—they actually have an ice cream chef, if you can believe that—goes to the farmers’ market every week and creates different ice cream flavors based on what she finds.”

Diesel, A Bookstore

2:30 p.m.

“They have a unique collection of titles that bring back the love for reading from a paper book. They’ll also invite authors to come and read excerpts.”

Rudolf Valentina

3:30 p.m.

“A hidden gem is a tailor from Russia at Rudolf Valentina. It’s so hard to find a tailor who has true knowledge about how something should drape or be adjusted. He makes custom suits for men as well.”

Compartés Chocolate

4:15 p.m.

“While they’re recognized for their beautifully packaged chocolate bars, I like their chocolate-dipped fruits. They also have a nice terrace for enjoying your treats outside.”

5:30 p.m.

“Tavern owns the all-day dining experience. Their bar has a happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m. every day  where you can try amazing wines at a great value. It’s a totally unexpected surprise in such a fine restaurant.”

7:00 p.m.

“The chef, Travis Strickland, is a master of simple yet elegant cooking. My favorite appetizer is the shrimp cocktail— each shrimp is a quarter pound.”
