SOCIETY, SCANDALS, AND SATIRE: A DISPLAY OF JOSE GUDALUPE POSADA’S ICONIC PRINTS
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada, this event features chapbooks and prints by the artist. What better place to celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead than Olvera Street? After the candlelight Novenario processions, which are held nightly, you can peruse the elaborately decorated altars while sipping cinnamon-tinged hot chocolate and munching on pan de muerto (sweet pastry). Also, view the Dia de los Muertos community altars on display in the Plaza area. It’s a perfect opportunity to celebrate departed loved ones and reflect on the beauty of life–even in death. NOCHE DE OFRENDA / COMMUNITY ALTAR NIGHT

DAY OF THE DEAD AT BORDER GRILL
Dia de los Muertos can be a delicious holiday. Celebrate with Border Grill in Santa Monica as they roll out a special prix fixe menu ($42 per person) featuring Mexican delicacies like roasted baby beets, Pulpo a la Parilla, and Barbacoa short rib. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS: THE MAGICAL WORLD OF ALEBRIJES
Break out the face paint and go skeletal. The country’s largest Dia de los Muertos celebration (35,000 people attended last year) takes place in the illustrious cemetery where everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Johnny Ramone is buried. The festivities begin at noon with a family-friendly carnival, segue into evening as the elaborate ceremonial altars are lit, and kicks into high gear with a concert and a dance party that goes until midnight. The lineup includes Chicano Batman, Buyepongo, and Ceci Bastida. With this year’s theme, “The Magical World of Alebrijes,” expect beautifully decorated altars in the Alebrijes style (brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures).
