Giddy Up! The Autry Shifts Into High Gear With a New Gallery of Art

Gene Autry would have been nothing without Champion, his equine sidekick. The museum he established now showcases another western steed: a mint-condition 1948 Indian Chief Roadmaster. The motorcycle, with its chieftain wheel ornament, has a place of pride in the Art of the West exhibition at the new Irene Helen Jones Parks Gallery of Art. Along with paintings, pottery, and a beaded Sioux dress, the bike is one of more than 100 treasures on display as part of the Autry National Center’s multimillion-dollar revamp. It’s also a kick-ass ride.
