After a year and change spent listening to new music from the confines of our homes, dance parties and concerts have returned (with some restrictions, of course) and artists are ramping up their new releases. Each week, we pick a handful of newly released songs worth a play.

Lil Nas X, MONTERO

Two years after making history with his first single “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X has finally given birth to his debut album, Montero. Living up to the magnificence and hype he’s built over the past few months with the release of videos like “Industry Baby,” a memorable performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, and trolly-worthy content on social media, Montero features high-profile artists like Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and Miley Cyrus. To commemorate the 15-track album, the pop-rapper also dropped a steamy video with his rumored boyfriend for the single “THAT’S WHAT I WANT” reminiscent of the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain. Mozzy, Untreated Trauma

Back in May, Sacramento emcee Mozzy teamed up with Compton rapper YG for their collaborative album, Kommunity Service. Today, Mozzy releases his first solo project of the year, titled Untreated Trauma, which features guest appearances from Carson rapper Kalan.FrFr, Babyface Ray from Detroit, and Atlanta’s YFN Lucci. The visual for Mozzy’s single “Straight to 4th,” which released on September 9, already has more than 1.7 million views on YouTube. [artist info]

Kehlani, “Altar”

Just days after announcing her upcoming album Blue Water Road, Kehlani released a beautiful, cinematic video for the R&B single “Altar.” On Instagram, the Oakland native said “understanding grief and death has been a journey. i’ve gained a lot of angels in my life but the last year has showed me that even after people have passed on, if i choose to, i can have an even closer relationship. i thank my angels, my guides, all those who walk with me for allowing me to see them, feel them, hear them in full. i honor you in all i do. this is my offering.” Blue Water Road is slated to release sometime this winter. Dijon, “Many Times”

Following up his 2020 EP How Do You Feel About Getting Married?, singer-songwriter Dijon released a new song titled “Many Times” on Friday. The percussion-heavy song about heartbreak also arrives with a visually intriguing music video, which follows Dijon during a jam session as words fill the screen in an artistic clutter. On Instagram Dijon said, “I made this with my brother and deep conjuror of inspiration and awe @mk.gee_ and the wonder wizard @sarloson in a 2pm flurry fever dream. Feel like we did something true.” He adds, “Felt truly like myself making this song with y’all and I’m over thee moon to share it. Smoke up.” [artist info]
