The battle of affirmation-fueled spinning franchises rages on. Flywheel Sports will finally open its first Los Angeles outpost — on Larchmont Boulevard on April 13. With a West Hollywood grand opening looming some time in the not-so-distant future, Ruth Zukerman might give her former studio, SoulCycle, a run for its money.
Both enterprises are known for workouts that amp up the self-help rhetoric to rev up your heart rate, delivering sweat-drenched catharsis to devotees who will sign up for classes days in advance. There are already three SoulCycle locations in L.A. — Brentwood, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood — with another slated to open this summer in Beverly Hills. (Northern California locations are slated to open in Larkspur and San Francisco in the next few months.)
Flywheel may get a leg up on the Angeleno indoor cycling market when it crashes the sleepy hollow of Larchmont Village with its bass-thumping cardio therapy. Even the site’s standard issue prep page sets the bar high: “YOU decide exactly what’s right for you by controlling the technology on your bike.” And later: “You’ll ride just once before you understand completely, ‘Why Flywheel?'”
Online registration for weekly classes will open on Sundays at 5 p.m. For a cool $25, you can join like-minded riders on a 45- or 60-minute “experience” that promises “a chance to achieve something more.” Or you maybe you’ll just tone your butt and ogle a celebrity looking as sweaty and disheveled as you are.
