Need a Good Cry? Check Out the Trailer for The Light Between Oceans

The film tackles love, marriage and the loss of a child

It’s tough to elicit tears via a film trailer. Trailers are only about three minutes long, after all, and they have to sum up entire three-act movies.

But if anyone can do it, it’s the director who brought the world Blue Valentine, the most painful, excruciating break-up movie ever to hit the silver screen. With The Light Between Oceans, Derek Cianfrance takes on parenthood, and he takes it on full bore. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander—both of whom are up for Oscars this year—play a couple that finds a baby who drifts onshore in a lifeboat. They adopt her, only to meet her biological mother two years later, who believes the child is dead.

In real life, Fassbender and Vikander are Hollywood’s latest it-couple (or so we’ve been led to believe), having been photographed together for the first time at the Grand Prix in Monte Carlo last year.

That’s all well and good, and so try to keep that happy story in mind after you’ve given this trailer a watch and completely fallen apart emotionally.

The Light Between Oceans is set for release on September 2, 2016.
