This Is the Face of Sheer Joy, Brought to You by a 13-Year-Old Opera Singer

It’s the best day of this America’s Got Talent contestant’s life

Q: Do we all know that reality singing competitions—The Voice, America’s Got Talent, The X Factor, American Idol, Nashville Star, The Sing-Off, Star Search—are, for the most part, over-produced machines that rarely generate lasting, quality musicians?
A: Yes.

Q: Do we watch them anyways in case human diamonds like Kelly Clarkson or Pentatonix or Alanis Morissette or Justin Timberlake come along? Or because we’re dead inside and sometimes we just need to feel something?
A: Obviously.

Such is the case with sweet little Laura Bretan, a 13-year-old opera singer who left Chicago with nothing but her voice and a dream (and her mom) in pursuit of fame on America’s Got Talent. Look at her tiny braid! And her adorable pink shirt! And her precious face when that gold confetti flies! If this kid’s audition from the Season 11 premiere doesn’t make you weep—I did, and you can judge me all you want—then take a long, hard look in the mirror, because you’re probably a monster. Revel in her joy below.
