Kanye Isn’t Playing Coachella 2019—but Idris Elba Is

The April fest’s full lineup has a few surprises

At around 8:30 last night, Coachella dispatched its full 2019 lineup via Twitter. As TMZ reported earlier yesterday, Kanye West is a no-go (it had long been rumored he’d headline) thanks to the fest’s “artistically limiting” and “archaic” 40-by-60-foot stages. Instead, Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande will play headlining sets on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, respectively, during the two consecutive weekends the fest turns Indio, California, into a Mecca for millennials who like music and dust: April 12-14 and April 19-21.

The lineup is a dizzying bonanza of artists you may or may not be familiar with depending on how many years you’ve been alive on this earth, but nestled in Saturday night’s small print was a name most people know. The Wire actor and Sexiest Man Alive Idris Elba, who apparently moonlights as a DJ, is playing a set, which he announced with big emoji eyeballs on Twitter this morning.
