Ailey Brings Dance to the People — Again

Leap, strut, and bound through Downtown’s Grand Park as members of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater teach you excerpts from their seminal work, Revelations. To prepare for their six performances at the Music Center (April 17 – 21), the company is staging several dance events this month starting with a huge celebration this Saturday.

RockaYourSoul: LA’s Celebration of Gospel, Dance and Ailey (April 6) is a free day of workshops, activities, and performances in dance, gospel music, quilt-making, singing, and visual arts. The afternoon culminates in a huge participatory recreation of Revelations. Ailey’s most famous choreographed work, it was inspired by the people, music, and movement of his heritage. The company will also host student residencies, master classes, and workshops in schools around the city throughout the month, sponsored by the Glorya Kaufman Dance Foundation.

Though he and his company are indelibly associated with New York, Ailey himself grew up and learned to dance here in Los Angeles. The visit to L.A. by his eponymous troupe, now under artistic director Robert Battle, commemorates Los Angeles as well as Ailey’s roots with a community-building celebration. Saturday’s event also features L.A. artists like the Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles, storyteller Victoria Burnett, and Music Center teachers giving a fan-making workshop, the perfect prop for the Revelations recreation.

Saturday, April 6, 2013, 1pm to 5pm, Grand Park and Event Lawn. Free. More information
