There Will Be a Live Rick and Morty Orchestra at L.A.’s Adult Swim Festival

The fest mixes major music acts with Adult Swim-inspired experiences

Adult Swim Festival is making a debut appearance in L.A. this fall. The event, October 5 to 7, mixes a traditional music festival concept with stand up comedy, and immersive touches and experiences that could only come from the minds behind shows like Rick and Morty, Bob’s Burgers, and Robot Chicken.

Among those special fan experiences will be the “Rick and Morty Musical Ricksperience.” For the first time ever, composer Ryan Elder will be joined by surprise guests and a 37-piece live orchestra to perform the show’s score music live along with a special episode of the show. If that’s not enough Rick and Morty for you, there will also be a themed mini-golf course and giant hot dog ride.

ROW DTLA will be transformed into a surrealist comedy wonderland with Dream Corp LLC virtual reality eggs, the Meatwad Dome 4D Experience, a FishCenter & Friends live broadcast, and a large game installation thing known as Smack Up My Uvula, in which the objective is to wriggle across a swinging bridge to climb a giant, inflatable cat and, um, smack its uvula (it’ll make more sense when you see it, sort of).

But even if all the TV tie-ins are lost on you, Adult Swim Festival has plenty to offer non-fans as well. The musical talent is as strong as any festival in L.A. this season, with Run the Jewels, Big Freedia, Neko Case, Kamaiyah, Clams Casino, DAWN, and dozens more. On Saturday, Brainfeeder Takeover features the top talent from the local label with Flying Lotus’s 3D show, Thundercat, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Dorian Concept. A comedy track offers performers including Hannibal Buress, Ahmed Bharoocha, and Jena Friedman.

If you can get your act together early and purchase tickets online by September 14, you’ll be entered in a sweepstakes for prizes ranging from free food and drink vouchers to limited edition merchandise, skip-the-line passes, and even a chance to play video games with Adult Swim stars.

This will be Adult Swim’s largest foray into live events yet, building on activations they’ve held earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con and smaller pop-ups at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs and a space inside last year’s Desert Daze festival.

Adult Swim Festival takes place October 5 to 7, 2018, at ROW DTLA, 777 Alameda St., downtown. Tickets are available online, for $49 to $255 (must be 18 or over to attend).
