You Can’t Eat the Sunshine is a weekly podcast series produced by Kim Cooper and Richard Schave in which the Esotouric founders talk with L.A. personalities about the city’s myths, contradictions, and inspirations.

This week, Richard and Kim speak with poet, playwright, and novelist Dan Fante about his new memoir and the writer’s creative process. They also sit down with Julie Rivett, granddaughter of Dashiell Hammett, to hear about about her grandfather’s literary legacy.

In this exclusive clip, Dan recalls a drunken run-in between his father (novelist John Fante) and William Faulkner, and Julie gives us a behind-the-scenes look at her grandfather’s famed fictitious detective Sam Spade .
