We’ve Got a Question For… Chad Fenwick

Only 29 percent of Los Angeles Unified School District students who were recently tested passed all six criteria that measure basic fitness. As the LAUSD physical fitness adviser, how do you improve those results?
In 2011, there was a change in testing protocol. Our scores dropped, but we have been improving for the past seven years. We don’t have enough money to provide a physical education teacher at every school, but we have a great model where a P.E. teacher visits a school and leads a lesson, while the classroom teacher watches and helps. With about 500 elementary schools, we aren’t going to turn everybody around on a dime. But I won’t be happy until every teacher takes their class outside for P.E.
