Warren Christopher Has Passed Away

Former Secretary of State Warren Christopher passed away over the weekend at age 85.  The diplomat spoke with Los Angeles for our December 2010 feature “50 L.A. Stories.” Here is the story he shared:

“After Pearl Harbor in 1941, when I was just finishing Hollywood High School, Japanese submarines were lurking off the coast here and L.A. was blacked out for a couple of weeks. I remember going around trying to ensure that my neighbors closed down their lights. Around that time I was working for the Hollywood Citizen-News. They promoted me from copyboy to junior reporter at 16 and started giving me assignments. I covered the Los Angeles Angels at Wrigley Field in my old Model A Ford. That’s when I felt that L.A. was becoming my town, because I would get around to cover stories. From the start I liked its breadth, how much creativity there was, how diverse it was. But that’s when I really dug in.”
