Walker in L.A.: Driving Shoe

Seeing the city from the ground up

Should you find yourself strolling down Santa Monica Boulevard just west of the 405, there may come a moment when you fully expect a Disney character to walk out of a nearby store and climb behind the wheel of this high-top hot-rod. Maybe Goofy? It looks like his style. The “shoe car” is parked outside Quality Shoes, a shoe repair shop that has certainly fixed its fair share of flats. Part custom masterpiece, part Claes Oldenburg sculpture, this is mobile programmatic architecture at its best; a driveable version of Randy’s Donuts. It’s also achieved legendary status in the neighborhood. As I walked by on a warm afternoon, a mom and daughter took turns having their photos taken in front of the most pedestrian-friendly automobile in town.
