Trump supporters have stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Members of both houses, along with Vice President Pence, were inside the building at the time of the attack for a pro forma certification of Joe Biden’s electoral victory.
While it is believed that most lawmakers, staff, and a number of journalists have at this point been evacuated to safety, the scene over the past few hours has been and remains chaotic.
“What we are seeing are a small group of extremists dedicated to lawlessness,” Joe Biden said in an address to the nation regarding the events. “At their best, the words of a president can inspire. At their worst, they can incite.”
The president-elect called emphatically on the current occupant of the White House go on national television and repudiate the mob’s activities and call for order.
Following an announcement from Trump’s spokesperson that National Guard troops have been dispatched to clear out the mob from the Capitol, video shared by The Washington Post showed a member of the pro-Trump group instructing the assembled individuals with a bullhorn, saying that when they were cleared from the Capitol, the group should next turn their attacks on journalists and media organizations.
