This Weekend in L.A.: Los Angeles Marathon

If you happen to be awakened early Sunday morning by the sound of thousands of pounding footsteps, don’t be alarmed, it’s just the Los Angeles Marathon. This year’s route extends from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica passing through downtown, Echo Park, West Hollywood and Westwood along Sunset and Santa Monica boulevards.
Street closures throughout the city will be staggered between 3:15a.m. and 3p.m. on Sunday, essentially nixing any plans for cross-town morning errands. Among this year’s participants are a 450-pound sumo wrestler, Kelly Gneiting, who is seeking to become the fattest man to ever run a marathon and Kenyan professional runner Wesley Korir, who has won the L.A. marathon the past two years. Somewhere in between will be 25,000 other participants slugging through the 26-mile course.
Luckily, for those who prefer the comfort of their couch, the Los Angeles Times has complied a virtual tour of the marathon route, which can be enjoyed sans blistered feet, bursting lungs and pulled hamstrings. (If you would like to register, there is still time). And of course, we wish best of luck to all the brave runners.
