After leaving an album release party at the Peterson Automobile Museum, East Coast rapper Notorious B.I.G. is shot and killed by unknown assailants around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and Fairfax Ave. The shooting represented a violent culmination of the East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry that had dominated the music scene for years and had claimed the life of Los Angeles rapper Tupac Shakur six months earlier. While no suspects were officially charged in his death, theories connect the crime to producer Suge Knight, Los Angeles street gang the Mob Piru Bloods, and gang-affiliated LAPD police officers David Mack and Rafael Perez. As of 2010, a federal task force including the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office and FBI officials has been brought on to work with newly discovered leads in the case. Due to the highly sensitive nature of the case, it’s not likely any conclusions will be made public soon. R.I.P Biggie Smalls.
