Last night Los Angeles magazine threw a launch party at Book Soup for contributing writer Jesse Katz’s memoir, The Opposite Field. The evening got a Halloween kick as high winds knocked out the power to the W. Hollywood shop for the first hour and the reading began spookily by candles and booklights. The crowd actually “awwwwed” when the power came back on – nothing more mysterious than a bookshop in the dark – unexplained shadows around every corner plus who doesn’t look better by flickering candlelight? But with the lights back on, it was all the better to eat fancy cheese sandwiches and buy books. The memoir began as an article Katz wrote for this magazine four years ago – Out of Left Field.
