The Family Guy creator is (almost) up there with Spielberg and Katzenberg

While old school Hollywood players like Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg have been the go-to donors for Democratic political wannabes for decades, controversial Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is literally giving them a run for their money.

As the Los Angeles Times reports, the 45-year-old writer-director has donated $4.6 million to federal campaigns since 2005, mostly to Democratic Political Action Committees. In that same period, Dreamworks founders Spielberg and Katzenberg parted with $8.4 million in Dem contributions, and $5.9 million, respectively. Meanwhile, Macfarlane contemporary J.J. Abrams ponied up $2.2 million in that time.

In 2018, MacFarlane stepped up his money game, donating $2.5 million to the Democrats through his company, Fuzzy Door Productions. This largess landed him the No. 2 Democratic contributor spot in Hollywood, behind Dreamworks SKG, but ahead of third place Disney last year.

Aside from donating to liberal candidates, MacFarlane also made news last year when he gave $2 million to NPR, and an additional $500 thousand to NPR L.A. affiliate KPPC after Fox News’ Tucker Carlson suggested Americans ignore all news sources except his own.

MacFarlane also donated $200,000 in 2016 to the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality Votes initiative to fund candidates who support gay marriage.

He has not yet backed a Democratic candidate for the 2020 Presidential race, and he declined to speak to the Times for their article. He recently said on Twitter, however, “From Biden to Bernie or anyone in between, whoever the candidate is, I’m behind them a thousand percent.” His tweet was in response comedian Patton Oswalt to point out why the alternative is too surreal to contemplate.
