Public Service Announcement: Meet L.A. Food Bank Volunteer Mary Connors

Shining a light on local do-gooders

Name: Mary Connors
Organizations of choice:
Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and Alexandria House

I volunteer to give back to those less fortunate than I am. I am blessed and grateful to have a job, a house to live in, a car to drive, food on my table, and clothes on my back. Not everyone does. I volunteered at the food bank for the first time in August 2009 and at Alexandria House in December 2009. I’ve been with both organizations ever since.

At the food bank we sort and repack donated food items. Sometimes it’s fresh fruit and vegetables, other times it’s canned and dry goods or frozen foods. At Alexandria House we sort donated items and clean, paint, do repairs, and garden. Every month is different.

To volunteer I gave up nothing really. Just time, although I have donated money and non-cash goods as well.

In return, I get satisfaction that I am able to bless others. That gives me joy and peace in my heart.

From one volunteer to another, not everyone can donate money or goods, but everyone can donate time. Sometimes that’s all that’s needed. Come with the attitude of giving.
