Podcast Preview: The Impossible Craftsmanship of 20th Century Tile Work

You Can’t Eat the Sunshine is a weekly podcast series produced by Kim Cooper and Richard Schave in which the Esotouric founders talk with L.A. personalities about the city’s myths, contradictions, and inspirations.

This week, Richard and Kim talk with Southern California tile expert Brian Kaiser about the handcrafted, painstakingly glazed works of art in Sister Aimee Semple McPherson’s Lake Elsinore castle. They also chat with William Andrews Clark Memorial Library Visual Resources Specialist, Jennifer Bastian, about her new “Exhibition in Six Courses: Testing Recipes from the Clark’s Manuscript Collection.”

In this exclusive clip, Bastian reveals the struggles of recreating a recipe in which the amount of eggs used are measured in pounds, and Kaiser discusses the beleaguered tile-making process commonly used in Sister McPherson’s day.
