Podcast Preview: How The Adaptive Reuse Ordinance Has Transformed Downtown L.A.

You Can’t Eat the Sunshine is a weekly podcast series produced by Kim Cooper and Richard Schave in which the Esotouric founders talk with L.A. personalities about the city’s myths, contradictions, and inspirations.

This week, Richard and Kim talk with Elaine, who is the caretaker for evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson’s 1920s Moorish castle in Lake Elsinore. They also sit down with CRA/LA urban planner Donald Spivack to discuss the rebirth of historic Downtown Los Angeles and the challenges that arise in a community that is chaging so quickly.

In this exclusive clip, Elaine imagines what a day at McPherson’s castle retreat may have looked like for the proselytizer, focusing on the private moments she’d have spent with her family. Spivack talks through the rapid-fire chages that have been taking places in L.A.’s historic core, including an influx of residents and the gentrification of the areas surrounding downtown.
