Oscar, Interpreted

Our morning walk up the ridgeline trail in Runyon Canyon led us to stumble on this, a mutilated Oscar statue, standing 7 feet tall and chained to the ground. An apparent commentary on the nip/tuck culture of Hollywood, it features a partially exposed skull, among other visible skeletal details. The only clue to its origins is a little gold plaque that says “Beauty is One Snip Away — D*Face.” Another similar statuette is anchored in the parking lot of Mel’s Diner on Highland Avenue, just a stone’s throw from the Kodak Theatre, where the Academy Awards show takes place on Sunday.

A quick online search reveals that D*Face is an English multimedia street artist named Dean Stockton who uses spray paint,
stickers, posters, and stencils. And now, evidently, huge skeletal mannequins, spraypainted gold.
