» Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law Thursday authorizing the return of property known as Bruce’s Beach—a former prime beachfront resort for Black beachgoers—to the heirs of a Black couple that had been run out of Manhattan Beach in the early 1900s. “This can be catalytic,” Newsom said about the bill. “What we’re doing here today can be done and replicated anywhere else.” [Los Angeles Times]

» California music legends Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar, along with Eminem and Mary J. Blige are set to perform on February 13, 2022 at the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, which will be hosted at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The show will be the first time the music heavyweights perform together on stage and also the first time since the Super Bowl returns to Los Angeles since 1993. » An 18-year-old woman who was shot in the head by a Long Beach Unified school safety officer, which left her brain dead, is expected to be taken off life support on Friday, her family’s lawyer said. Mona Rodriguez has been on life support since the tragic incident on Monday in which she was fleeing in a car, along with her 20-year-old boyfriend and a 16-year-old boy, when the safety officer shot at the moving vehicle. » Just a year ago during the COVID lockdown Los Angeles saw its lowest gas prices in recent years, but on Thursday, gas prices reached their highest level of the year as earthquake-related problems continue to keep costs up, according to AAA. The average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the L.A.-Long Beach area reached $4.41 this week, which is a cent higher than the previous week, but still remains about 30 cents less than their all-time record levels.
