Fans of the Marvel miniseries Moon Knight are incensed over a scene in the second episode where—according to viewers who know Mandarin—the language is turned into mush, or “gibberish,” per the Los Angeles Times.
In the scene, Ethan Hawke’s character, Arthur Harrow, has a brief conversation with a young girl and a caption leads viewers to believe it’s being spoken in Mandarin. The conversation itself is not subtitled, however, nor are the other scenes where foreign languages are spoken.
“I am so sick and tired of prominent Western productions butchering my language repeatedly, turning it into offensive ‘oriental’ sounding gibberish that doesn’t make sense,” tweeted user Windsor Liong after viewing the scene. “This is definitely not Mandarin…”
A friend sent me this clip of @moonknight and it fills me with rage. “ok episode 2 wtf was that they were very much not speaking mandarin thats so embarrassing of marvel,” tweeted Spidejoce.
User sadasianfan remarked, “as a born and raised chinese who speaks mandarin, this is not it. i did not even understand a single thing.”
Even one of Marvel’s other stars has joined the fray. Simon Liu, who starred in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, tweeted “Alright Arthur Harrow needs to fire his Mandarin teacher.”
