MamaLA: Out With the Old, In With the Charitable Giving

How to turn spring cleaning into a lesson in philanthropy

Spring has sprung. And so have our kids—right out of last year’s warm weather clothes. Soraya’s son Hayden isn’t feeling those ‘70s short shorts and Siena’s skirts suddenly look straight outta Dance Moms. Blessed with mid-winter beach days, Los Angeles mamas are the envy of many, but while our east coast friends are switching out their winter wool for cooler cotton, Yasmine’s still trying to squeeze her 3T Maverick into 2Ts. We’ve somehow “missed” the whole seasonal thing. We’re hanging onto a hoodie or two to thwart off June Gloom, but it’s time to dive into those overstuffed drawers for some serious spring-cleaning. The feel-good part? Those tiny treasures can be passed to some great kids.

Shannon Komsky, who owns the Sherman Oaks children’s boutique Tough Cookies, shared an opportunity to turn our pint-sized fashionistas into budding philanthropists. Shannon herself is no novice to good deeds; she met her husband while volunteering for the Los Angeles Jewish Home for the Aging. One darling six-and-a-half-year-old daughter later, she’s transformed spring-cleaning into spring-giving. “Every year, we have Mia go through her clothes to find the ones she doesn’t use anymore and together we donate them,” she explains. “I bring her along because I think it is important for her to see how fortunate she is. The difference between wanting something and needing something is so great.” Amen.

Shannon has made it easy for us to enlist our lil’ helpers. From now through Sunday (April 28th), drop off your gently used children’s clothing and shoes at Tough Cookies or any of the L.A. drop-off locations listed below. Gently worn means you’d let your kid wear it, no holes or stains please. Items will go to Jessica Seinfeld’s Baby Buggy, a non-profit dedicated to collecting and distributing donations to local social service providers including The Children’s Institute, Elizabeth House, L.A. Family Housing, and Bienvenidos.

To celebrate your clean closets and happy hearts, if you drop off at Tough Cookies before Sunday, you can pick an envelope with gifts from neighboring businesses. On Sunday, Shannon’s offering donors up to 20% off storewide, and between 11:30 a.m.- 2 p.m., Mac-O-Licious will be dishin’ up eats while Andrew & Polly make music.
