Crews from the Los Angeles Fire Department are working to put out a fire in the attic of the Magic Castle. The Magic Castle confirmed the blaze on Twitter shortly before 1 p.m. today with this tweet: “LAFD is on the scene and handling the current situation. Our staff has evacuated the building.”
The Los Angeles Times reports that the fire was centered in the attic of the sprawling 102-year-old Lane estate. Magician and TV writer Milt Larsen started the club in 1963 and continues to perform onstage there. Here’s hoping this fire is contained quickly and doesn’t destroy the thousands of magical antiques and artifacts displayed inside the mansion looming above Hollywood. Reports are that the Dante Room suffered serious water damage. Our best wishes to Larsen and the Castle family.
A fire destroyed a mansion at the same location in the 1950s. Only a balustraded staircase survived that blaze.
UPDATE: Not a surprise, but the Magic Castle has announced they will be closed this evening.
