UPDATE: Here’s some feel-good news for the weekend. Stolen In Echo Park, heretofore to be known by her true name, Fannie, has been reunited with her owner, Cesar Aguilar. According to ABC7, 51-year-old suspect Jenny Smiles was arrested after a witness overheard Smiles and her associate talking about Fannie’s capture and contacted the police. “I’m happy when the police called me this morning,” Augilar told ABC. “I’m happy because the police told me they had my dog.” Authorities are still on the lookout for Smiles’ cohort in this strange caper.
Published on 4/26/15: Two women posing as employees of Los Angeles’ Police Department Animal Cruelty Task Force dognapped a pet from a home in Echo Park Thursday. The Los Angeles Times reports the pair—dressed in green uniforms and armed with official department fliers—told a male homeowner they were investigating claims of an abused animal and then took off with his fluffy white dog. Authorities are worried the random event could turn into a string of robberies, so don’t let strangers handle your pets. And let’s all think good thoughts for little Stolen In Echo Park, too.
