Indie Spirits Bring The Fun, ‘F-ck You,’ And Find ‘Lost’ Maggie Gyllenhaal A Lot of Wins

For 30 years out of its 37-year-old existence, the annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were held under a jumbo white tent in the heart of Santa Monica Beach, just adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier. The awards are not only held geographically far from Hollywood, but are also the least “Hollywood” of awards shows in terms of overall ambience. The films that qualify for nomination are relatively low budget projects made outside of the Hollywood system.

After being cancelled two years in a row due to the pandemic, the arrivals at the Indie Spirits’ pre-show cocktail party had more of a buzz than usual. Despite a brisk chill in the air on a sunny L.A. Sunday, strict health restrictions and a slew of traffic-slowed shuttle buses dropping off guests. Irreverent and highly comedic married actors Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally hosted the show with plenty of wit, sarcasm and sex jokes. They even inserted themselves into a clip from Best Documentary winner Summer of Soul as a white musical duo who, via fluke or flub, performed at the historic 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.
