At Least 5 Dead, 7 Hurt in Fiery Crash as Speeder Runs Red Light in L.A.

5 are dead including a pregnant woman and her infant after a driver ran a red and plowed burning vehicles into a Windsor Hills gas station

At least five people were killed, including a pregnant woman and her infant child, and seven injured as fire erupted from a multi-vehicle crash at a Windsor Hills gas station Thursday afternoon.

The crash was reported around 1:40 p.m. at South La Brea and Slauson avenues, KTLA reports. Video obtained by station shows the moment of impact as the driver of a dark-colored Mercedes speeds through a red light without braking and strikes two vehicles in the intersection.

The vehicles were then sent careening into a gas station as they erupted in a fireball.

“We have a total of at least six to seven vehicles involved, at minimum, at this time. Three became engulfed in flames,” said California Highway Patrol spokesman Franco Pepi told KTLA. The agency is still investigation the cause of the crash.

Two of the three burned cars came to a stop under a fuel station sign, another appeared to have rolled onto its roof near the gas station entrance in the community about 10 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, according to NBC News.

A woman who declined to be identified told the Times that a Mercedes-Benz hit her car as she was leaving a United Oil gas station. “I was getting out, had got gas,” she said. “All of a sudden that Mercedes is coming at me on… fire. I didn’t have any time to think about it. It hit my car. I veered, hit the bench on the side.”

The totaled Mercedes with a smashed hood ended up against a curb. Investigators believe the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was responsible for the crash, Pepi said.
Witness Veronica Esquival told KTLA the explosion forced her to cover her head against flying debris when, “All of the sudden, a baby literally flew from the middle of the intersection to the middle of the gas station and landed right on the floor in front of me. One of the workers came and saw me with the baby and took the baby out of my hands.”
