Is this the prettiest stop sign in Los Angeles? I found myself arrested by the overgrown jasmine-encrusted infrastructure while walking in Silver Lake this summer. It made me think about the parkway, that tiny strip of grass that separates sidewalk from street. The city owns it, but you, the property owner, are responsible for maintaining it. This results in a wide range of landscape improvisations, from sidewalk gardens to impromptu sculpture or, sometimes, just a big pile of trash. Thanks to the tall hedges and blackout fences of many L.A. houses, the parkway is often all I get to see of a homeowner’s personality. It’s nice when one adds a little something to bring out my smile from the sidewalk.
