A Walker in L.A.: Our Streets After Dark

Halloween is hands-down the best possible holiday for walking. You’re traversing the sidewalks with hundreds of thousands of costume-clad citizens, meeting your neighbors and peeking into strange houses, and getting to see your community in a different light. Which made me realize I hadn’t yet posted any photos of walking in L.A. at night, one of my favorite times to explore the city. Because the sky never truly gets dark, we’re treated to all sorts of silhouettes, like the cut-paper shadow art we made in school. When I took this photo on a residential street in Mar Vista, I was appreciating how the palm trees hovered on the horizon. On a night like tonight, though, I’ll be imagining them as giant, friendly monsters having a conversation with each other just above my head.
