West Side streets may have seemed more congested in 2010 than in years past, but they were definitely safer. This weekend Police Department Investigator Chris Dawson told the Santa Monica Daily Press that more than a year has passed since the last fatal car accident in Santa Monica. Dawson credits educational campaigns about safe driving and an increase in traffic enforcement among the reasons for the drop in fatal accidents. ‘We have big city traffic for a small town,” he told the paper. “I can never remember a time, and I’ve been here 20 years, when we’ve had a year without a fatality.” Local authorities (and, we’d like to think, everyone else, too) hope to keep the safer-driving trend going through the holidays and into 2011.
