It predates CVS, which isn’t known for commissioning fine art. Sculptor Jonathan Borofsky’s 30-foot-tall Ballerina Clown combines the head of a tearful funnyman with the body of a female dancer. When it was unveiled at the mixed-use development in 1989, Los Angeles Times art critic Christopher Knight compared it to pieces by Picasso and Seurat. He also noted that on special occasions, the statue’s right leg kicks out to the tune “My Way.” If it still worked, I’d gladly drive over for the show.
