Your Guide To A Marilyn Monroe Memorial Weekend


Marilyn Monroe fans from around the world are gathering in Hollywood this weekend to mark the fiftieth anniversary of her untimely death. Here are just a few places where you can celebrate the legacy of the mid-century sex symbol.

Dress up and dine where Monroe (and Elizabeth Taylor, Jayne Mansfield and Natalie Wood) dined with a special visit to the 20th Century Fox Commissary. The visit also includes a group tour and a discount at the Fox gift shop.

Photographer George Barris will be on hand to talk about Marilyn and the iconic pictures he took of her in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Barris will sign his book Marilyn: Her Life In Her Own Words.

The lobby of the El Portal theater is decorated with photographs of the actress and renamed in her honor during a champagne reception. A new play, Marilyn: Forever Blonde, will follow.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place flowers on Monroe’s star. There will be no ceremony.

More than a dozen of the late star’s friends and fans from all over the world will gather for a graveside memorial service at Monroe’s marble mausoleum. A recording of the original eulogy by Lee Strasberg will be replayed. A reception will follow at Westwood Presbyterian Church fellowship hall.

Author Lois Banner will sign her new Monroe biographgy The Passion And The Paradox before a screening of River of No Return at the Egyptian theater in Hollywood. Producer Stanley Rubin is the special guest for a Q&A.

Sunday, August 5th 6:30 p.m.

Legends In Concert star Jeffrey Allen will serenade the 26-foot-tall Marilyn statue in Palm Springs with songs from Elton John at this free outdoor concert in the desert. The weather forecast is 110 degrees and glow sticks will be distributed.
