Who Is Killing The Great Murals of Los Angeles?

The Art in the Streets exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art has enlivened the debate about art in public spaces and about murals, graffiti and tagging. The conflicting forms of expression don’t seem to get along too well in public, judging by the layers of paint covering iconic pieces like Kent Twitchell’s Jim Morphesis Monument downtown. I was so glad to see this video (with some pretty cool archival footage of the murals in their prime) and hear about artists like Twitchell teaming up with the Mural Conservancy to bring back some of these pieces that once made people call Los Angeles the mural capital of the world.
