When I first moved to L.A., I found Malibu Creek State Park. I was excited to learn they filmed Planet of the Apes there. What are some other remote filming locations?

The dunes of Morocco (Ishtar) tend to be uncrowded. Seriously, for recommendations closer to home, Ask Chris brought in Harry Medved, who is the coauthor of Location Filming in Los Angeles and Hollywood Escapes, which offers maps, directions, and stills. His favorite secluded movie spot is the sea cave at Leo Carrillo State Park, where Grease, The Usual Suspects, and most of the Roger Corman beach flicks were shot. Reaching the cavern requires a short, rocky hike, and it’s accessible only at low tide. Medved also favors the mission-style Calvary Baptist Church in Lancaster, the scene of the wedding massacre in Kill Bill.
