The very first time an Academy Award was given out, it was in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, enjoy that “HRH” logo before you strike that match. The glamorous banquet hall at the Roosevelt was the site of the first Oscars in May, 1929 (the special effects airplane blockbuster Wings took the first Best Picture) and since then has hosted thousands of formal events, including the TCM Festival each April. The last time I was there, I rubbed elbows with olde tyme stars Kim Novak, Robert Wagner, and Miss Margaret O’Brien. It’s that kind of place. The hotel itself has been remade and enhanced with fancy bars, a vintage-style bowling alley and the restored David Hockney pool.
