Even if you’ve never been to Boyle Heights, you know the historic 6th Street viaduct. The iconic Los Angeles river bridge is in every establishing shot that sets a movie in L.A. It’s in seemingly every car commercial of the last thirty years and Ryan Gosling, John Travolta and Arnold Schwarzenegger have all raced under or above it in action movies. Alas, our grand Art Deco bridge suffers from alkali-silica reaction, a rare disorder that is causing its concrete frame to flake away and it must be replaced. Rather than try to recreate the original, the Design Aesthetic Advisory Committee is hosting a design competition to replace it. Get a first look at the ideas tonight at the suitably futuristic LAPD headquarters and ponder what sort of bridge the car commercials of 2022 will be filmed at. Meanwhile, enjoy this thrilling car chase in the Los Angeles River from the forgotten 1970’s cop show Cannon.
