If you’ve been to the Arclight Hollywood recently you’ve probably seen the way cool figures from the kids vs. zombies flick Paranorman on display in the lobby. This stop-motion technique has been used in films dating back to King Kong and The Lost World and this movie is so hyper-stylized it’ll be fun just to admire the cantilevered hairdos and retro cars. It is exhausting to imagine the time and effort it takes to subtly manipulate tiny models for months on end. A tip of the hat to CartoonBrew for hipping us to the panel of seven artists from Laika studios (Corpse Bride, Coraline) that are coming down from Portland for a free book signing and discussion at Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra. If the movie is any good you’ll probably see me there amidst the zombie makers and zombie collectors.
