Burt Bacharach marks his 86th birthday today and I’m celebrating with this dazzling little clip of his 1964 hit Walk On By. I love Bacharach so much I keep a songbook on my coffee table for impromptu sing-alongs. The dancers, the candy colored brownstone, and the incredible Dionne Warwick make Hal David’s bummer lyrics almost effervescent. Who knew Aretha Franklin, Cyndi Lauper, and Isaac Hayes also covered it? Bacharach recently performed at the White House for President Obama, is touring Europe this summer, and collaborating with Elvis Costello on a new musical.
