The Duke Ellington orchestra is coming to the Hollywood Bowl next Wednesday. The evening features Tierney Sutton and Brian McKnight and honors the centennial of Stan Kenton. Ellington led the band from 1923 until his death in 1974 and wrote more than 1000 original compositions. He also hired singer Herb Jeffries as a featured vocalist with his band. Jeffries lives in Idyllwild and celebrates his 99th birthday next month. Here’s his most famous song, Flamingo, recorded with the Duke in 1940. I called to interview Herb about his movie career a couple years ago and he sang part of this song over the phone. I’ll never forget it.
