The Beach Boys (Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks) will perform at the Hollywood Bowl this Saturday night as part of their 50th anniversary tour. The lineup is a reunion for co-founder Wilson, who hasn’t played with the group in nearly three decades. If you can’t get a ticket to see Hawthorne’s favorite sons this weekend, you can always head to Don the Beachcomber for this incredible simulation.
I asked Beach Boys experts Domenic Priore (author of Smile: The Story of Brian Wilson’s Lost Masterpiece) and graphic artist Mark London about their favorite video moments with the band.
Priore: “The Good Vibrations clip was filmed at the fire house (now a museum) on Cahuenga. That’s brilliant and at the end they head up Vine north to Hollywood Boulevard on the back of a fire truck.”
London: “Here’s my favorite non-obvious clip. I call it Brian Wilson inventing California. John Cassevettes interview…very highbrow and stuffy, until exactly 1:29. The newly released California Girls comes on and the serious droll New Yorker kinda….changes and now wants make musicals!”
